Occupying the underground floor of an existing construction in Seoul, the store's exposed structure is augmented through a robust lighting system, which earned the winning spot in the Best Use of Light category.

TheTamburins Seongsu Flagship Store won the FRAME Award for Single-Brand Store of the Year, but its lighting concept also secured the project’s victory in the Best Use of Light category. Considerable attention was paid to lighting to make the underground space feel open and inviting. The goal was to fill the central space with soft yet powerful lighting capable of penetrating the three-storey height of the structure while maintaining a cozy ambience. A profile louvre luminaire was installed along the lower edges of the glass structure to provide uplighting without direct glare. This design allows light to sweep up the glass façade, highlighting the void within the structure and visually extending the underground exhibition space to the ground floor.

Jury member Nazanin Naeini, exhibition designer at the Guggenheim Museum, appreciated how the project ‘uses light as a tool to amplify the architecture, introducing a new layer that emphasizes the contrast between the solid structure and the glass void. The lighting subtly enhances the form while maintaining a harmonious balance between mass and transparency.’

‘It’s very well executed, with the different temperatures and lights, and it’s not too much,’ said architect Søren Pihlmann, founder of Pihlmann Architects. ‘We should also highlight the effort it takes to go in this direction, as we should be better at working with existing structures.’
